GenevaA historic adoption of a treaty to ban or restrict tobacco advertising and marketing was a memorable climax to the 56th World Health Assembly, which met here in late May. This annual gathering of delegates from the 191 member states of the United Nation's World Health Organization (WHO), was also notable for the ending of the 5-year term of WHO Director-General Gro Harlem Brundtland, who is succeeded by Jong-Wook Lee, MD, MPH.
In addition to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), Brundtland emphasized two crisis of public health that have marked the last year and described the WHO's responses to them: the epidemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the growing HIV/AIDS pandemic.
