In Reply: We agree with Dr Danis that estimates of injury incidence based on insurance data should be interpreted with caution. However, we stand by our conclusion that there is a low rate of injury in youth baseball. In a 3-year study of 100 high schools in North Carolina, the injury rate for baseball was 1.5 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.3-1.7) per 1000 athlete-exposures.1 This was lower than the overall injury rate of 2.3 (95% CI, 2.2-2.4) per 1000 athlete-exposures for the 12 sports studied and well below the rate for football (4.2 per 1000 athlete-exposures; 95% CI, 4.0-4.4).
Recent studies using data from national sources indicate that baseball and softball injuries account for 5% to 10% of all sports and recreational injuries.2-4 Surveillance data from a national probability sample of 66 hospital-based 24-hour emergency departments indicate that baseball accounts for 6% of all visits for sports and recreational injuries . . .
