Effects of Exercise and Weight Loss on Hypertension

To the Editor: It is not clear how participants in the PREMIER study1 achieved "at least 180 min/wk of moderate intensity physical activity." This is an important question particularly for minority women, who are at higher risk for obesity and lifelong chronic diseases. Minority women, particularly Hispanic and black women, typically engage in limited kinds and amount of physical activities, if they do any at all (S.Y. et al, unpublished data, 2002).2 Their physical activities are often tied to their domestic and paid-work related activities.3-4 Such activities are generally unintentional, spread across the day, of low intensity, and vary by season and pregnancy status (S.Y. and S. Lee, unpublished data, 1999). It would be important to know whether such irregular and unintentional activities, if enhanced, would be as effective as structured exercise in terms of health.
