This is the first volume of an ongoing compilation of "profiles featuring individuals who have made significant contributions to the study of cardiovascular disease." Since 1986, these profiles have been published every month in the journal Clinical Cardiology. Included in this Who's Who of cardiology are prominent figures whose discoveries, research, and innovations have paved the way for breathtaking advances in the science and practice of modern cardiology. The next installment in book form is planned to arrive in ten years' time, but individual accounts will continue to be published in Clinical Cardiology in the interim.

The three editors are cardiologists, teachers, and educators of distinction. J. Willis Hurst is the chairman emeritus of the department of medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga, a consummate teacher, editor of the textbook Hurst's The Heart, and prolific writer.
