To the Editor: In their study of prognostic factors for new-onset kidney disease in community-dwelling individuals, Dr Fox and colleagues1 used the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) Study formula to estimate the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). However, this formula does not appear among the 7 equations for estimation of GFR in a reference that the authors cited.2
Furthermore, we are aware of only a single study that validated the MDRD formula in individuals with normal creatinine serum levels.3 In that study, the accuracy of the MDRD equation was poor, as only 24% of GFR values predicted by the MDRD formula were within the 30% of values as measured by the iohexole technique. Furthermore, the MDRD formula had a large amount of systematic, nonrandom deviation.
