In Reply: In reply to Dr Corsonello and colleagues, the simplified MDRD equation for estimation of GFR is advocated by the Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiative (K/DOQI) working group.1 This formula is based on the equations presented in the original MDRD study,2 but Corsonnello et al are technically correct that we did not present the simplified equation. It was originally published as an abstract3 and can now be found in the K/DOQI practice guidelines.1
Corsonello et al note that the only published study to validate the MDRD prediction equation in individuals with normal serum creatinine levels is by Bostom et al.4 These individuals had serum creatinine levels less than or equal to 1.5 mg/dL, but all had chronic kidney disease, many with glomerulonephritis and significant proteinuria, and a GFR range of 18 to 205 mL/min per 1.73 m2.
