Optimal Recall Rates Following Mammography—Reply

In Reply: In response to Dr Goodson, mammography screening is performed less often in the United Kingdom than in the United States. As a result, there are increased numbers of invasive cancers detected at each screening examination but in all size categories (<10 mm, 10-20 mm, and >20 mm), as shown in the right-hand graphs in the Figure in our article. Thus, contrary to Goodson's suggestion, the proportion of invasive cancers of more than 20 mm was very similar between the United States and the United Kingdom (14% of cancers in the US Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium [BCSC], 18% in the US National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program [NBCCEDP], and 20% in the UK National Health Service Breast Screening Program [NHSBSP] were >20 mm at subsequent screening examinations).
