To the Editor: Drs Sirovich and Welch1 show clearly that the recommendations of the 1996 US Preventive Services Task Force are not being followed. However, I believe that patients may equate not needing a Pap smear with not needing a pelvic examination. The authors did not address the value of pelvic examinations in women who have had hysterectomies for benign reasons and are asymptomatic, and whether this would change based on their ovarian status.
