Estrogen Receptor {alpha} Polymorphisms and the Risk of Myocardial Infarction—Reply

In Reply: Although we do not have information about oral health for the participants in the Rotterdam Study, we do have extensive information on osteoporosis and bone mineral density. The association reported by Dr Taguchi and colleagues between ESR1 polymorphisms and postmenopausal tooth loss in postmenopausal women is in line with an association we found in men and women between these polymorphisms and osteoporosis.1 The same haplotype found to be associated with risk of MI in postmenopausal women2 was also associated with lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) and vertebral fracture risk in these same women. Taguchi suggests that the association we found between ESR1 polymorphisms and ischemic heart disease may not be a causal relationship but rather an indirect result of the associations between ESR1 polymorphisms and tooth loss, and between tooth loss and risk of MI.
