The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has announced that it will spend $144.3 million over the next 5 years to fund cancer-related nanotechnology research. The institute has formed the new NCI Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer, which will implement the Cancer Nanotechnology Plan. Nanotechnology incorporates the design and use of devices at the nanometer scale.

Within the first 3 years, the plan calls for acceleration of projects that hold promise for near-term clinical application. For subsequent years, the plan will focus on difficult technological and biological problems that could have the potential to have an impact on cancer detection and treatment.
