This interesting book is unique in covering extensively and in detail a subject that heretofore has not been presented in an organized fashion. The author, Prof Dr Henk Klasen, is a surgeon and burn specialist, formerly of the University Hospital, University of Groningen, and member of the board of the Dutch Burns Foundation. History of Burns begins with a laudatory foreword by William W. Monafo, MD, a pioneer in burn treatment who worked with Carl Moyer, MD, at Washington University. Nine chapters follow, each ending with a summary and exhaustive list of references, most in German or English.
The first chapter is on burn classification. The author begins by discussing the work of Richter (1788) on the relation between burn wound size and the patients prognosis.
