There are several reasons for a second edition of Medicine: Preserving the Passion: the success of the first, the turn of a new century, advances in technology and knowledge, and changes in the medical environment. All these appear to have played a role in the publication of this new, readable, weighty, and informative volume.

It is 18 years since the appearance of the first edition, also edited by Dr Phil R. Manning and Dr Lois DeBakey, and the two have renewed passion for their favorite subject. The opening sentences in both the foreword and preface make clear that the practice of medicine has changed radically in the intervening years and with it the learning needs of physicians. Rather than the structured, large, lecture-oriented conferences and meetings of the past, what is needed today and in the future are individualized learning programs.
