In Reply: Dr Aboyans and colleagues raise a number of salient issues regarding the CAMELOT study. With regard to selection bias, we did examine the demographic characteristics of patients in the IVUS substudy; their clinical characteristics were very similar to those enrolled in the main trial. With regard to comparisons with the REVERSAL trial,2 we were reluctant to make any statements regarding the relative effects of statins and antihypertensive agents on atherosclerosis progression, primarily because comparing 2 different trial populations is hazardous even when demographic characteristics are similar. In addition, treatment duration was 18 months in REVERSAL and 24 months in CAMELOT.
We concur with the observation that amlodipine demonstrated the greatest effect on the "hospitalization for angina" end point. We provided post hoc data analysis on rates of death, myocardial infarction, and stroke to emphasize that results for these "hard" end points were similar in both active treatment groups. . . .
