To the Editor: JAMA published single-author Commentaries on health care by President Bush and Senator Kerry.1-2 Sole authorship implies that each of them wrote their own article without benefit of ghostwriters, silent authors, or unnamed coauthors. I doubt that is correct. Likewise, there was no conflict of interest or financial disclosure statement. Did the candidates receive no funding that might possibly influence their opinions?
We expect researchers to write their own articles and state if they have any conflict of interest. Should we expect less from the persons running for what is arguably the most important job in the country? JAMA should have published these plans under the true authors names, with a message afterwards from the candidates stating their approval. This should then have been followed by a detailed listing of significant donations they received, with potential conflicts of interest.
