Medical research in Europe has a rich tradition of discovery, innovation, and productivity. Today the European Union and the United States are the leaders in biomedical investigation and research productivity. In Europe and the United States, politicians and science administrators attempt to compare the scientific output from the 2 continents, but the data are unreliable mainly because there is not a subdivision of available resources and funding, or a broad documentation of opportunities or emphasis. Few attempts have previously been made to compare medical research from an international perspective, but it is becoming urgent now when life sciences are emerging as an international joint enterprise involving both developed and developing countries worldwide. This article compares research funding, activities, and creativity in the European Union and the United States, based on available data and my personal experience as a scientific manager on both continents.
