FDA Official Resigns

Susan Wood, PhD, director of FDA’s Office of Women's Health and assistant commissioner for women’s health, has resigned following the FDA’s announcement in late August that it would delay a decision on whether to allow the morning-after pill, called Plan B, to be sold without a prescription.

The FDA stated that its drug center had concluded that the available scientific data were sufficient to support the safe use of Plan B as an over-the-counter product for women who are 17 years of age and older. But because of unresolved regulatory and policy issues, the agency said it would begin another regulatory process and hold a new 60-day public comment period.
