Recent outbreaks of severe respiratory disease in racing greyhounds have been found to be caused by influenza viruses closely related to H3N8 equine influenza virus, according to a new study published in Science. Although nearly all dogs appear to be susceptible to infection with this virus, "about 80% of them will have a mild form of disease, just characterized by cough and maybe some nasal discharge that will resolve over time with appropriate therapy," said lead author Cynda Crawford, DVM, PhD, of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, in Gainesville, Fla, at a press briefing on the findings.

The episode is the latest example of an emerging disease resulting from a pathogen leaping from one species to another.
