A massive nationwide childrens health study that could help answer questions about the role of the environment in birth defects, asthma, diabetes, obesity, autism, and other conditions could begin enrolling participants as early as 2007but only if sufficient federal funding is allocated.
The National Childrens Health Study took an important step forward September 29 when the Department of Health and Human Services and the Environmental Protection Agency announced the names of the first participating institutions: the University of California, Irvine; the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York City; the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia and Drexel University in Philadelphia; the University of Utah, Salt Lake City; and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
