Additional research from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institutefunded Womens Health Initiative has shown that calcium plus vitamin D supplements in healthy postmenopausal women provide a modest benefit in preserving bone mass and preventing hip fractures, but compliance was important to show a substantial benefit. However, the supplement did not show evidence of preventing colorectal cancer (Jackson RD et al. N Engl J Med. 2006;354:669-683; Wactawski-Wende J et al. N Engl J Med. 2006;354:684-696).
