A 62-Year-Old Woman With a New Diagnosis of Breast Cancer

DR BURNS: Ms T is a 62-year-old woman with a new diagnosis of left breast cancer. A routine mammogram performed in the fall of 2004 revealed a 9-mm spiculated mass deep within the upper inner quadrant of her left breast. Prior annual mammograms had been normal. No mass was palpable in this area, but ultrasound demonstrated a hypoechoic mass at 10 oclock a few centimeters from the nipple. A stereotactic core biopsy was performed and disclosed an infiltrating lobular carcinoma.
Her medical history was otherwise noteworthy for recurrent bouts of diverticulitis and osteopenia. She experienced menarche at 12 years of age. She has 2 children and was 21 years old at the birth of her first child. She briefly used oral contraceptives and never used fertility medications.
