New FDA Head

Tracy Hampton, PhD

JAMA. 2006;295:1889.

Since this article does not have an abstract, we have provided the first 82 words of the full text and any section headings.

President George W. Bush has nominated Andrew von Eschenbach, MD, to be commissioner of the FDA. Von Eschenbach plans to step down from his role as director of the National Cancer Institute, his position since 2002.

The nomination has caused unrest among some Congressional Democrats who, concerned about the FDA's delay in deciding position on whether to allow over-the-counter sales of emergency contraceptive pills, vowed to place a hold on the nomination until the agency decides on the matter.
