Parkinson Disease Guidelines Aid Diagnosis, Management

Recognizing that Parkinson disease often is misdiagnosed and that nonmotor complications such as depression and dementia frequently are left untreated, the American Academy of Neurology has developed new guidelines that address the disease in a more comprehensive manner, beginning with appropriate diagnostic criteria.
"We think this set of guidelines will help neurologists and other physicians take better care of their patients," said William J. Weiner, MD, chair of neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, in Baltimore and one of the authors of the guidelines. Weiner was among a panel of authors who discussed the new guidelines in early April during a news conference at the academy's annual meeting in San Diego, Calif.
