Citing a high level of confusion among beneficiaries mulling the new Medicare Part D drug benefit plan, several members of Congress from both sides of the aisle proposed extending the enrollment period.

Currently the deadline for enrollment without penalty is May 15. But legislation introduced in the House and Senate would change that.

"No one should feel pressured into making a bad decision," said Rep Pete Stark (D, Calif), a coauthor of one of the two new House bills, in a November 15 press release. "Our bill would allow beneficiaries to take their time, check their facts, and know their options without being rushed to choose."

Stark's bill (HR 3861) and similar legislation in the Senate (S 1841) would extend the enrollment period through all of 2006. A bill introduced by Rep Michael Fitzpatrick (R, Pa) and Rep Robert Brady (D, Pa) seeks to extend the deadline 6 . . . [Full Text of this Article]
