In today's research environment, investigators can find it difficult to secure funding, especially for projects that might go out on a limb or are not directly linked to particular diseases. In an attempt to free scientists of such restraints, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) has spent the last 6 years planning, constructing, and recruiting scientists to a research campus that will foster innovative studies and unique collaborations.
