On the road to a rewarding career after his residency, Ben Springgate, MD, MPH, wanted to find the intersection of health care, health policy, and health disparities. Without a traditional map to show the way, Springgate's compass pointed to the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine (UCLA), which serves as one of four academic training sites for the Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) Clinical Scholars Program.
As a clinical scholar, Springgate hoped to build on work he had done as a medical student and resident at Tulane University School of Medicine in developing clinical programs for the homeless of New Orleans. But just as he started at UCLA in summer 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck and created an unprecedented intensive program for providing health care for the homeless.
