Increasing Medical School Matriculation for Minority Students—Reply

In Reply: Drs Dyrbye and Shanafelt raise an important point. Increasing the number of minority students admitted to medical school, whether through postbaccalaureate programs or otherwise, will not result in an increased number of minority physicians in the workforce unless those students graduate. Addressing the reasons for the somewhat higher risk of attrition among minority medical students is yet another critical element in the effort to close the racial and ethnic diversity gap in our profession.

No single solution to the complex problem of eradicating the unhealthy racial and ethnic skew that exists in the physician workforce will suffice. Among the multiple interventions that must be simultaneously implemented are ensuring that all children have access to high-quality K-12 education; encouraging more minority students to consider medicine as a career; offering opportunities to bolster the academic preparedness of those who aspire to become physicians but who need some additional course work . . .
