Mosquito Gene Map

Tracy Hampton, PhD

JAMA. 2007;298:32.

Since this article does not have an abstract, we have provided the first 150 words of the full text and any section headings.

Researchers have completed the first draft of the genome sequence of Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that spreads yellow and dengue fever. The work was led by scientists at the Institute for Genomic Research, in Rockville, Md, and the University of Notre Dame, in Notre Dame, Ind (Nene V et al. Science. doi:10.1126/science.1138878 [published online ahead of print May 17, 2007]).

The investigators also sequenced large amounts of messenger RNAs collected from different mosquito tissues. Matching a messenger RNA to a predicted gene is a method for validating authenticity of the gene.

Nearly 50% of the A. aegypti genome consists of transposable elements, sequences of DNA that can move around to different positions within the genome and can have a significant impact on its structure and size.
