Both the AIDS epidemic and research in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/AIDS have rapidly expanded during the quarter century since the discovery of this syndrome in 1981. In fact, the publication rate of HIV-related medical and scientific literature is too large to simultaneously keep adequately abreast of all aspects of the field. Jay A. Levy, MD, who has made seminal discoveries both in HIV virology and HIV immunology, recently published his third edition of HIV and the Pathogenesis of AIDS. This expanded version, which contains 56 additional pages and 1985 new references, brings into focus many of the important virological and immunological discoveries made during the 9-year interval since publication of the second edition.
