Clinical Revenue Investment in Biomedical Research—Reply

In Reply: I agree with Dr Post that the West Penn Allegheny Health System has academic interests and characteristics, for which I have great respect. However, a commonly held concept of an academic medical center is that it is built around a medical school (and often other health science schools) present within the center, in addition to many other graduate and postgraduate training programs, as well as substantial research programs. In describing the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and its associated medical and other health science schools as the "only academic medical center in Western Pennsylvania," my coauthors and I focused on this concept. Many community hospitals have residents, medical students on an elective rotation, and National Institutes of Health grants. I regret that a colleague at the West Penn Allegheny Health System feels that our statement mischaracterized its contributions to regional health care, research, and medical education.
