The federal government's actions regarding the surveillance and ultimate quarantine of an Atlanta man with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) came under criticism June 6 from members of the House's Homeland Security Committee.

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the chief medical officer of the Department of Homeland Security, and top officials with Customs and Border Protection responded to questions from the committee on how Andrew Speaker was allowed to fly to Europe in May for his wedding after being diagnosed with tuberculosis and then allowed to enter the United States from Canada after it was determined he carried XDR-TB.
