IT Workforce Bill

A bill authorizing $99.6 million to promote health care information technology (IT) research that could lead to 10 000 new jobs in the field passed by a voice vote June 6 in the House.

The bill (HR 1467 [http://thomas.loc.gov]) calls for authorizing the National Science Foundation to award grants through fiscal year 2011. The grants consist of $37.2 million to universities to expand and improve health care IT training programs, $29.2 million to junior colleges to establish or expand associate degree programs in health care IT, $18.6 million to universities to create centers for IT research, and $14.6 million for basic health care IT research.

The bill's sponsor, Rep David Wu (D, Ore), noted that the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that 136 000 people in the United States were employed as health care IT management professionals in 2000 and that to meet the growing demand, this workforce . . . [Full Text of this Article]
