Cecilia Beaux (1855-1942) painted men of war and men of healing. She painted rulers and ruled, the famous and the not so famous. Above all, however, she painted pictures of children, from toddlers to teens, sometimes with a mother or nurse, more often as singles; occasionally a sibling shared the canvas. Children were her métier. Unlike the tender mother-child paintings of her slightly older contemporary, Mary Cassatt, Beaux portrayed her children, even those barely out of infancy, as miniature adults, knowing beings, and, except for height, ready to deal with the world.
