Genetic Clues Revealed

Tracy Hampton, PhD

JAMA. 2007;298(21):2471.

Since this article does not have an abstract, we have provided the first 150 words of the full text and any section headings.

Madrid, Spain—Often a final and fatal step in cancer progression, metastasis causes 90% of all cancer deaths and is associated with a median survival after diagnosis of less than 2 years. But ongoing research efforts are providing clues to potential therapeutic targets by deciphering the complex genetic events that enable tumor cells to disseminate and invade distant organs.

Scientists discussed some of the latest findings at Oncogenes and Human Cancer: The Next 25 Years, a recent conference celebrating the 25th anniversary of the isolation of oncogenes from human tumors.

METASTASIS GENE SIGNATURES

Gene expression profiling has proved to be a particularly useful tool for revealing the genetic mutations that impart metastatic properties to cancer cells. This technique has allowed researchers to identify different gene sets that are associated with metastasis of breast . . . [Full Text of this Article]
