Textbooks that attempt to be both encyclopedic and practical while still meeting the diverse needs of neophytes as well as experts usually fail. The fifth edition of Wilderness Medicine, edited by Paul Auerbach, is, however, an overwhelming success and will appeal to a broad and diverse audience, from vacationer to wilderness enthusiast to harried clinician.
