"Roadmap" Aids Malaria Vaccine Efforts

The international public health community has long hoped for a vaccine that could prevent the more than 1 million deaths that occur each year from malaria infections. However, a variety of factors—including the complexity of the malarial parasite's life cycle, a lack of sufficient funding, and difficulties associated with conducting research in the developing countries that are hardest hit—have stymied progress.

Now, scientific developments and a renewed commitment to cooperation among researchers and funding organizations are helping to bring scientists closer to creating a viable malaria vaccine.
