Many individuals in the United States are unaware of risks to their eyesight and warning signs that may predict serious eye disease, according to the results of a survey sponsored by the National Eye Institute and the Lions Clubs International Foundation.

Between October 2005 and January 2006, researchers conducted a telephone survey of a nationally representative sample of US adults, asking them about their knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to eye health and disease. The results indicate that many are not well educated about eye health, according to the National Eye Institute, which plans to use the results to design public awareness campaigns.
