Obstacles to writing a good, practical textbook are increasing. In particular, easier-to-update online resources are often ubiquitous, and the relevance of printed information can be quickly rendered obsolete by new technology and shifting expert opinion. But there remain significant pockets of clinicians who would benefit from quality hardcopy editions. Not everyone practices in academic mega-centers or technologically savvy hospital wards. In their nearly 1400-page Comprehensive Pediatric Hospital Medicine, editors Lisa Zaoutis and Vincent Chiang recognize this challenge, to the benefit of an increasing, important subset of pediatric professionals.
According to Chris Landrigan in chapter 24, pediatric hospitalists number about 1000 nationwide, while hospitalists in general—some of whom will care for children—number about 10 000.
