Lead Paint Rule Criticized

New federal rules designed to further protect children from exposure to lead-based paint will not provide the comprehensive protection the law requires, Rep Henry A. Waxman (D, Calif), chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, has charged.

The new Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting Program rule, issued March 31 by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is to take effect in April 2010 and prohibits work practices that create lead hazards. The rule also calls for the certification and training of paid contractors and maintenance professionals working in pre-1978 housing, child care facilities, and schools.

Waxman said in a release that the rule contains multiple loopholes and allows dangerous renovation practices to continue in homes occupied by women of childbearing age, homes where children visit, and homes that will be sold to families with young children.
