Nursing Homes Scrutinized

Nursing homes providing poor quality care are now being listed on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid's (CMS’s) Web site (http://www.cms.hhs.gov/CertificationandComplianc/Downloads/SFFList.pdf).

The November 29 action by the CMS followed November 15 hearings in the Senate and House that focused on the need for increased transparency and stronger enforcement of nursing home quality rules.

"Often the only way to ensure the improvement of any entity is to bring its failings to light," said Sen Herb Kohl (D, Wis) at the Senate's Special Committee on Aging hearing. "I honestly believe that more nursing homes will come back into compliance for good if they have the court of public opinion and the power of market forces as encouragement." Kohl plans to introduce the Nursing Home Transparency and Improvement Act of 2007, which among many provisions, would mandate the CMS to post publicly names of nursing homes with poor care . . .
