IOM: Focus on Care for Aging Population

Thirty years after its first call for expanded geriatrics training, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has issued a more urgent warning. In a new report, the IOM cautions that the US health care system is poorly equipped to care for unprecedented numbers of older US adults who will flood the system in just a few years.
Geriatrician John Rowe, MD, chair of the IOM committee that produced Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce, said the report addresses workforce problems that threaten the delivery of quality care to elderly patients even if the Medicare hospital insurance trust fund were adequately funded.
