To the Editor: In a Medical News & Perspectives article, Mr Mitka1 discussed a recently published consensus report on treatment of asthma in children, referring to the report as evidence-based guidelines.2 We believe that the news article contains inaccuracies.
The published report2 is a consensus opinion from members of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI). An editorial accompanying the report stated that it is not an evidence-based guideline.3 The PRACTALL initiative addresses areas of interest to allergists and immunologists, particularly areas where there is either a lack of guidance or a divergence of opinion between US and European practice. Representatives from each academy reviewed and tried to reach a consensus on diagnostic or therapeutic issues.
