This is the first edition of this textbook. It has 115 contributors, most from Europe and the United States; 778 pages in 3 sections; and 64 chapters with 565 figures and 330 tables. The authors have assumed the task of providing a book that attempts to cover the spectrum of retinal vascular diseases.

The first section, on the pathogenesis of retinal vascular disease, covers retinal vascular anatomy, basic pathology, retinal vascular development, angiogenesis, neovascularization, hypoxia, the blood-retinal barrier, retinal blood flow, and gene therapy. The section is well written and manages to facilitate one's understanding and clinical perspective. The photographs, diagrams, and tables are of high quality. As a clinician, I appreciated how this section made difficult topics easy to grasp and facilitated my understanding of the basic concepts of ophthalmology.
