Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was 53 years old when his second son, Jean, was born in September 1894. Living in and around Paris with his wife Aline (née Charigot) and their first child, 9-year-old Pierre, Renoir was by now a reasonably successful painter from the financial standpoint, although he was personally still nagged by doubts about his artistic worth, doubts that would plague him until his death in Cagnes-sur-Mer a quarter of a century later.
