Federal retirees enrolled in 2 government-sponsored prescription drug programs and the federal government are paying as much as $200 million a year for duplicative coverage.
In letters sent May 12 to Bush administration officials, Rep Henry A. Waxman (D, Calif), chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and Rep Danny K. Davis (D, Ill), chairman of the Subcommittee on Federal Workforce, Postal Service, and the District of Columbia, said the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) are not coordinating their coverage of the more than 200 000 federal retirees. Because these retirees are enrolled in both the Federal Employee Health Benefit Plans with drug benefits and the separate Medicare Part D plan, they and the government, which subsidizes coverage, are paying twice, the representatives said.
