Managing Pain in the Older Adult, edited by Michaelene Jansen, tackles the difficult and neglected problem of chronic pain in vulnerable elderly persons. With approximately 25% to 50% of community-dwelling older adults experiencing persistent pain, this topic has become a significant factor in the assessment and delivery of US health care. The sheer numbers and extrapolated expenses are compelling items within a system on the verge of collapse. The text is composed of 12 chapters written by multiple authors from different backgrounds. These chapters are divided between 2 sections, "Background Information" and "Multidisciplinary Approach to Pain Management in the Older Adult." The text is well organized and covers topics such as common pain syndromes, the relationship between chronic pain and poor sleep, and the pharmacological therapies, interventional treatments, and mind-body strategies used to mitigate chronic pain.
