Two senators are seeking information about industry funding of medical professionals affiliated with Columbia University and the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF), both in New York City.

In October 16 letters, Sen Chuck Grassley (R, Iowa) and Sen Herb Kohl (D, Wis) asked officials at Columbia University and CRF to provide detailed records of outside income since January 1, 2003, for 22 individuals affiliated with both institutions. In their letter to CRF, the senators said, "We are also concerned that funding from the medical device industry may influence the practices of nonprofit organizations that purport to be independent in their viewpoints and actions."

Grassley and Kohl have been probing the financial relationships between industry and physicians and researchers and have introduced a bill (S 2029 [http://thomas.loc.gov]) that would require companies to disclose payments to medical professionals.
