A young student at the Settlers Primary School in Durban, South Africa, wrinkles his nose as he looks into the camera lens. "It smells funny . . . it smells like something rotten," he says, describing an odor that frequently drifts through his classroom. One of the teachers at the school, Lawrence Vartharajulu, says children put their hands to their noses to block the stench. The children's eyes water and they complain of sore throats. Some feel dizzy and cannot concentrate, their teacher says.
