The National Eye Institute is making long-term medical and clinical trial data on nearly 5000 adults with age-related eye diseases available to researchers, according to the agency.
The data were collected as part of the Age-Related Eye Disease Study, which was launched in 1992. This prospective study involved 4757 individuals with age-related macular degeneration or age-related cataracts. The study also investigated vitamin and mineral supplementation as a treatment for these conditions. Patients were followed up on average for 6.5 years during the trial and for 5 years after the trial. DNA samples also were collected from many of the participants.
Qualified researchers can now access the data through the National Institutes of Health's Database of Genotype and Phenotype (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/projects/gap/cgi-bin/study.cgi?study_id=phs000001.v2.p1).
