To the Editor: The Editorial by Drs DeAngelis and Fontanarosa¹ makes valuable proposals on how to prevent medical publications from being turned into marketing tools by pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies. However, an author's declaration of financial dealings with industry is only meaningful if the monetary value received from each company over a preceding period (perhaps the past 2 years) is clearly stated.

Receiving $2000 for conference expenses carries different obligations and suggests a different relationship compared with receiving a $20 000 honorarium. To preserve personal privacy, the amount received could be declared in financial ranges, as is practiced by publicly listed companies when declaring personnel remuneration to shareholders in their annual report.

Increasing transparency in disclosure will clarify the actual financial interaction between authors and industry. This will lessen the chance that journal articles are subtly transformed into sponsored advertisements.
