The Army has taken several steps to improve its outpatient case management of service members wounded in action, but more can be done, concluded the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in a report released April 20.

The report (http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d09357.pdf) noted that after a 2007 series of articles in the Washington Post disclosed problems at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, the Army established Warrior Transition Units for service members requiring complex outpatient case management. The units operate at 33 military installations in the United States as well as 3 locations in Germany. Each service member requiring care through these units is assigned to a team comprising a primary care manager, a nurse case manager who coordinates and monitors the care, and a squad leader who ensures the patient attends medical and administrative appointments.
